The Lightkeeper

The Lightkeeper

The summer's smiling face has turned away
It never says goodbye, it's just hello to a cloudy day
The vane above my roof has turned to north
That fibbing weatherman has told another life, of course
The coastline seems so bare today
And springtime seems so far away

I'll shine my beacon for the ones
Who didn't have to go away

The pathway to the cliff is gettin' hard
The beachgrass shows its yellow down below the lighthouse yard
The whitecaps off the shore they tell a tale
Of the ships htat never made it to the light outside the gale
The darkness brings us brilliant light
That dissipates beyond the night

I'll sleep until the noon horn sounds
And hope the sun stays shining bright

It's lonely when the people aren't around
But something makes me love this life I've chosen to fasten down
I'll warn away the captain coming close
And I hope I'm never haunted by the vision of his ghost

I'll shine my beacon for the ones
Who didn't have to go away
